GSH Airbnb Tours
This is your opportunity to see Mount Vernon and Lorton like a local. Even local residents are unaware of the rich history we have here in Mount Vernon, outside of the famous estate of George Washington.
Join GSH’s Development Director, Candice Bennett, as she leads a unique 4-hour tour through Mount Vernon or through Lorton. These tours are set up through Airbnb, but offer new fundraising opportunities that give GSH a chance to showcase the history of our community and highlighting our mission and housing. Every tour benefits our mission.
Mount Vernon’s Hidden Gems Tour
Our first stop will be at the Gum Springs Museum with GSM President Ron Chase to learn about one of the first communities of freedmen founded by West Ford, a freed slave and former foreman to the house servants at Mount Vernon. Depending on availability, we will also visit one of Good Shepherd Housing’s affordable apartments and hear how our mission has evolved with our changing community.
On our way to the Woodlawn Mansion, you’ll spy the Woodlawn Quaker Meetinghouse, home to abolitionists who supported the economic independence of free African-Americans in Woodlawn and Gum Springs. Our next stop will include special tour of the Woodlawn Mansion, which was part of the original Mount Vernon estate.
We will conclude our day with a tour and wine tasting at one of Fairfax County’s newest wineries, Woodlawn Press Winery.
Advance reservations are required and must be booked through the Airbnb website (link below). Tours will be canceled if there are no registrations 48 hours prior to the start time, to help us avoid a transportation cancellation fee.
Lorton’s Past and Present Tour
Our tour will begin with a visit to the Workhouse Arts Center and learn about the suffragists who were imprisoned there during the fight for the 19th Amendment. Depending on availability, we will also visit one of Good Shepherd Housing’s affordable apartments and hear how our mission has evolved with our changing community.
Our next stop will be a special tour of Gunston Hall, home to George Mason, considered to be the Father of the Bill of Rights.
We will conclude our day with a tour and beer tasting at one of Fairfax County’s award winning breweries, Fair Winds Brewing.
