Good Shepherd Housing Expands into Alexandria with Long-Term Affordable Housing Purchase
Alexandria, VA — May 6, 2025
Good Shepherd Housing (GSH) has officially expanded into the City of Alexandria with the purchase of a one-bedroom condominium in the Landmark-Van Dorn neighborhood—marking a significant milestone in the organization’s long-standing commitment to preserving affordable housing in Northern Virginia.
The purchase, GSH’s first in the City of Alexandria, was made possible through a strategic partnership with the City of Alexandria Office of Housing, a mission-oriented seller, and funding from the Housing Opportunity Fund. The seller John McManus, a Senior Vice President at LINKBANK, reflects a personal commitment to affordable housing preservation and LINKBANK’s dedicated partnerships with affordable housing developers in the region.
The unit will remain affordable for at least 99 years, ensuring long-term stability for low-income residents and reinforcing the City’s and GSH’s shared commitment to inclusive, stable communities.
“Bringing our mission to Alexandria reflects our strategic growth and deep commitment to meeting housing needs across the region,” said Genee Hayes, Executive Director of Good Shepherd Housing.
“Our scattered-site housing model is a proven tool in regional housing preservation efforts, and we’re proud to bring that model to Alexandria as the region confronts the affordable housing crisis.”
“This investment represents the best of partnership-driven housing preservation—anchored in stability, dignity, and opportunity,” added Erica McCants, Chair of the Good Shepherd Housing Board of Directors.
“The City of Alexandria is pleased to be working with a new partner, Good Shepherd Housing, to leverage the organization’s proven success and expertise in managing scattered site portfolios to help preserve affordability and stability for vulnerable Alexandria households,” said Helen McIlvaine, Director of Housing at the City of Alexandria.
The purchase also received support from the Women in Housing and Finance Foundation, which provided funding for closing and improvement costs. “This is an important step in providing safe, affordable homes and building bright futures, as Good Shepherd Housing continues its impact on our community” said Kris Kully, President of the WFH Foundation.
With this purchase, GSH continues its strategy of acquiring and preserving housing in amenity-rich, transit-accessible neighborhoods to ensure long-term affordability and access for low- to moderate-income households.
