On the Right Track
by Aleisha Wilhite, Community Case Manager
Janelle has been a part of the Good Shepherd Housing ABC program since August of 2016. Janelle and her daughter sought out housing assistance after she could not afford the rent at her previous home.
She had been living in her car or staying in hotels when she could afford it. Throughout the past 5 years Janelle has experienced hardships such as taking care of her dying parent, supporting her daughter through college, and being forced into homelessness when her landlord’s home was placed into foreclosure.
She applied for apartments in her name, but was rejected due to poor credit history, losing nonrefundable application fees every time.
Before joining our program, Janelle filed for bankruptcy, had a low credit score and did not have a budget plan. But in the past year, Janelle has increased her credit score, is paying her rent on time and in full, and works closely with the Community Case Manager to maintain her household budget.
Janelle is also working closely with Britepaths, another financial mentoring program and is on her way of becoming a homeowner in just a little over a year!
