A Successful Move In

by | Sep 1, 2016

Low-income households and individuals with disabilities face extra challenges when looking for housing that they can both afford and that is accessible. Recently, a homeless family came to Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services (GSH) because they were struggling to find housing. The mother has a disability that has left her confined to a wheelchair. The family had been living in a motel with no idea when they might be able to find a place to live they could call their own. Our Community Case Manager Jessica Seckman has been working for months to locate an apartment that could accommodate the wheelchair, but kept coming up empty.

But, just this month, we had a first-floor unit become available that we were able to modify to include a wheelchair ramp.

To make matters more difficult, the family was moving in with almost nothing. Thanks to a donor from HomeAid Northern Virginia and the moving assistance of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, the family received several pieces of furniture to help them start fresh.
