“Movers Who Care” Help Two Families in Need

The expense of moving to a new home and buying new furniture can break a family’s budget. So what happens when a homeless family finally gets a roof over their heads – but can’t afford a chair to sit on?

Enter TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, a local moving business, along with generous donors who, downsizing their own homes, offered up rooms full of furniture.

One GSH family of six was homeless for eight months after losing their home because of overcrowding. Not only do they have a place to live thanks to GSH, but the donors offered a full dining room set that could seat the whole family for meals, plus living room and bedroom furniture. The high quality furniture donated included:

  • A nine-piece dining set
  • Two sofas
  • A sleeper love seat
  • A bedroom set with matching headboard and footboard
  • Two wing back chairs
  • A recliner
  • A coffee table

Thanks to these generous donors, this family wouldn’t need to sleep on the floor anymore.

Except the furniture was 80 miles away. The family didn’t have a truck, or money to rent one. Neither did GSH. And so the call went out to TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®.

“TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® has always believed in giving back to our community,” said Zach Killdall, General Manager of Two Men and a Truck – Northern VA/DC. “When Good Shepherd Housing called and asked us to help their clients out who were in desperate need of furnishings after being homeless, we didn’t hesitate to help. We are proud to be a part of a community like Mount Vernon, which comes together to support families in need.”

Often we think that affordable housing ends a journey, but in many ways, it’s just beginning.

We welcome inquiries from downsizing homeowners who may have rooms full of high-quality furniture to donate, or from pillars of our community such as Two Men and a Truck who have skills to help.
